Municipality of Gouda creates an ecological urban strip

On behalf of the municipality of Gouda, wildflower mats have been applied at a challenging location: a narrow, elongated strip in the median of a main road.

It is precisely these kinds of places that show where standard solutions fall short. The limited width, traffic load, and maintenance requirements make it difficult to establish lasting greenery here. By using wildflower mats, a system has been chosen that can withstand these conditions.

For this project, a specific mix was used that was developed to support pollinating insects. It consists of low-growing, robust species that are highly resistant to external influences and can withstand multiple mowings per year. At the same time, they produce a continuous supply of food, with a flowering period from June through October.

What emerges is more than just a visual addition along the road. The strip functions as an ecological connection, a place where bees and other insects can find food in an environment where it is normally scarce.

For us, that is the core. Not every part of the city requires the same greenery, but every place offers an opportunity. By developing systems that fit the context, space is created for biodiversity, even where it is not self-evident. Wildr realized this project in collaboration with Flower Your Place.
