Rooftop flower meadow as retention roof

A rooftop flower meadow with a water-retaining core combines biodiversity and climate adaptation

More and more often, water must be retained on one’s own property. A retention roof turns your roof into an active link in water management. Beneath the same native Rooftop Flower Meadow lies a water-retaining layer that temporarily holds rainwater and releases it gradually. This reduces peak loads on the sewer system, bridges dry periods, and at the same time enhances biodiversity and the urban climate. One measure, multiple challenges solved.

Working at Wildr

We are building a new standard in which nature is an integral part of the built environment. We do this together with a team of designers, ecologists, and partners who work at the intersection of nature and design.

At the moment, we have no open vacancies.

However, we are always interested in people who identify with our way of working and want to contribute to projects where nature, technology, and design come together. Do you think you would be a good fit for Wildr? Feel free to send us a message via info@wildrgroup.com.

Parteon2

Robust

The self-sufficient variant, featuring over twenty native species and approximately fifty percent sedum. This variant does not require irrigation, making it particularly suitable for roofs where watering is difficult or undesirable. Its ecological value is high and it is still significantly more biodiverse than a standard sedum roof.

Which system will be underneath?

A waterproof retention roof

The retention roof from IKO and Wildr combines insulation, waterproofing, and rainwater storage in a single roof structure. IKO Compact Roof forms the solid foundation beneath the retention crates and the rooftop flower meadow biotope. Reliable waterproofing is essential here.

With stored water and substrate, the roofing is only partially accessible and leaks can have serious consequences. The layers bonded with poured bitumen together form a compact roofing system. Above that, the protective layer shields the roofing, while the filter layer prevents substrate particles from entering the retention crates. The crates store rainwater for controlled discharge, thus reducing peak loads on the sewage system. In this way, the system combines a robust roof base with water management for a changing climate, while maximizing biodiversity as the top layer.

Technical additions

The use of technology helps restore biodiversity. That is why various technical additions are possible to ensure optimal flourishing of species richness in the long term.

Moisture sensors

The use of a DBW Smart Sensor 55 or DBW Smart Sensor 110 provides 24/7 data on moisture conditions in the substrate

Irrigation

An irrigation system tailored to the requirements of the project ensures optimal water use and, where possible, a grey water source.

Smart water control

Providing water on demand prevents unnecessary consumption of one of the most valuable resources. Valve control in delayed drainage optimizes the reduction of peak load on the sewer system.
