The neighborhood is named after Tilburg’s most famous former resident, King Willem II. Contractor Van Wijnen Rosmalen is currently busy building 84 houses and 31 apartments, and in a few weeks idverde Realisatie, Haaren branch, will start installing approximately 3,600m2 of green roofs.

Green spaces are an important element in the new residential area. Greenery not only contributes to a pleasant living environment for residents, but also provides value in addressing social issues. Think of increased biodiversity through the right types of planting, water retention during heavy rainfall, and cooling during hot days.

Green roof provides more biodiversity, cooling, and water retention

The flat roofs of the homes will be fitted with a roof flower meadow. More than 40 native plant species will be used on the roof, which naturally occur in the surroundings of, among others, Tilburg. As a result, birds, insects, and other animals recognize these plants more easily, offering more food, breeding opportunities, and shelter. What makes this green roof special is that it is regenerative, meaning it sustains itself without any form of fertilization or pruning.

The growth layer of the roof is fully circular and contains no form of plastic in order to limit the ecological footprint.

The impact of such a flower roof is significantly higher than that of a standard sedum roof in terms of water buffering and ecological value, due to the high species diversity and functional variety. There is not only space for food, but also the functions of reproduction, shelter, and nesting material are ensured on the roof. Not unimportant is that the plants bloom for an extended period, which enhances the experience for residents.
